Summary: In Google’s two-year Project Aristotle, which studied 180 teams and 250+ team attributes, the most important attribute shared by the most successful teams turned out to be Psychological Safety. This post looks at “Anzeneering”, the practice of protecting the team.
If your answers to the questions below are “YES“, you’re in a good work environment.
If our people can wholeheartedly say “YES” to these questions, you’re a good leader:
1.) Every day, can I say that I am treated with dignity and respect by everyone I encounter? (regardless of pay, title, race, ethnicity, religious belief or gender)
2.) Have I been given the things I need, the things that will bring meaning to my life, so that I can contribute to the organization? (training, learning, tools, encouragement)
3.) Am I recognized for the work I do by someone I value?
And did you know …
That Google, over the 2 years from 2014 to 2016,
spending millions (in dollars, of course 😊),
with 180 teams,
through 200+ interviews,
analyzed 250+ team attributes and
at the end of Project Aristotle (I wrote that in one breath 😊)
found 5 attributes shared by the most successful teams?
And which of these 5 do you think turned out to be the most important?
Psychological Safety
This topic concerns everyone. Especially team managers and our leaders.
Because for our team members to unlock their potential and take risks courageously when needed, we have to support and protect them.
In Japanese, protecting the team is called “Anzeneering”.
(The Practice of Protecting People)
If you’re curious about the details, take a look at my earlier LinkedIn post below. I put it all together in a document, and I recommend it:
