STOP STARTING, START FINISHING

Good morning,

  • How’s work going?
  • “Busy” / “Hectic” / “I’m swamped” / “Crazy busy”

And the reply comes back almost like a compliment…

  • Good, good, better than being idle…

This week I wanted to share my take on one of the articles published in “Best of Agile Articles 2018”.

If you want to, you can be more productive.

According to a study by Gloria Mark from the University of California, the cost of a context switch is:

23 minutes and 15 seconds.

(the time lost regaining focus when we jump from one task to another)

Instead of focusing and finishing one thing, we want to be busy with many things at once.

But why?

The culprit has been found: our brain.

According to research by neuroscientists, our brain plays tricks on us: it rewards the wrong behavior,

releases dopamine, and we get distracted right away.

It even has a name: “bright shiny object syndrome”

If you want your brain to reward the right behavior instead of the wrong one,

here are some important tips:

  1. Escape the busy trap! → Work for 90 minutes, take a 20-minute break, do deep work, and stay away from distractions.
  2. Visualize it, make it visible, show it!
  3. Stop starting, start finishing! → Limit WIP (Work in Progress)
  4. Set a team goal!
  5. Develop your competencies!
